Its main building was originally designed by noted island architect Charles Dickey, completed in 1932 and gained renown as one of the longest standing landmarks for generations of residents and visitors who admired this "House Befitting Heaven."
The property captured the imagination of author Earl Derr Biggers, whose Charlie Chan novel, "House Without A Key," became a hit. Today, the House Without A Key open-air restaurant, named after the novel, recalls a time well before the late 20th century, when Hawaii homes needed no locks.
